How listings are labeled
This page doesn’t list individual businesses. Before you send a request, the form tells you which companies receive your information and whether they may call or text you.
Referral disclosure. We may receive compensation from participating solar companies or service providers when users request information or connect with a provider through this website. Sponsored or participating providers are identified where appropriate. Compensation does not determine whether a particular system or company is suitable for your property.
How Solar Works
A solar system is a chain of equipment. Knowing each link makes quotes much easier to compare.
Not every system has a battery, and export rules vary by utility and location. A grid-tied system without a battery or backup-capable inverter typically shuts off during a power outage, which is one reason backup needs to be designed in from the start.

A quote should name the exact panel, inverter and battery models. If it doesn’t, ask.
Installation Process
Nine steps most residential solar projects pass through, in roughly this order.
There is no universal timeline. Permitting, utility review, weather and installer schedules all vary by location.
Solar Products
Consumer products for portable power, small solar projects and everyday energy monitoring.
A portable power station is not a whole-home battery, and a small kit is not a grid-tied array. Whole-home batteries and rooftop systems are designed and installed by qualified professionals. Don’t connect portable equipment to household wiring unless it is designed, permitted and installed for that use.

Choosing an Installer
A good proposal is specific. A good installer is easy to verify and still around after the system is on the roof.
Some companies sell the system and hire a separate crew to install it. Ask who will do the work, who holds the licenses and who answers the phone if something goes wrong.
Ask every installer for
Directory listings are labeled Verified, Claimed, Featured or Sponsored. Featured never means best, and no company can buy a “best solar company” title here.
Solar Cost & Quotes
What drives the price, and how to compare proposals fairly.
Costs depend on your property, equipment and location. Price per watt ($/W) is only useful when quotes cover the same system size, equipment, scope and warranties.
Tax credits, rebates and net-metering rules vary by jurisdiction and change over time. Check dated, official sources for your location, and never assume an automatic percentage.

Batteries & Backup
Backup power isn’t automatic with solar. Decide what you want to keep running, then size the system around it.
Safety. Batteries store a lot of energy. Placement, wiring and connections must follow the manufacturer’s instructions, local code and a qualified installer.
Solar Repair & Upgrades
Local professionals for service, replacements and add-ons.
Safety first. Solar wiring can be energized whenever light reaches the panels. Don’t open, bypass or modify panel, inverter, disconnect or battery wiring yourself. Leave it to qualified, licensed professionals.
FAQ
Straight answers about solar installation, equipment and hiring.
There’s no single national price. Cost depends on system size, equipment, roof, electrical work, permits and location. Compare quotes that cover the same scope.
There’s no universal timeline. Design, permitting, installation, inspection and utility approval all vary by location, so ask each installer what to expect.
Not always. A battery adds backup and flexibility, and a grid-tied system without one typically shuts off during an outage. Decide based on your goals and local rules.
A sales company sells the system and may hire a separate crew. Ask who installs, who is licensed and who handles service later.
No. A portable unit plugs in and powers limited devices. A whole-home battery is wired into your electrical system by a professional.
No. Incentives change and vary by jurisdiction. Check current, dated official sources for your location before counting on any credit.
Small portable or low-voltage kits may be DIY. Permanent grid-tied systems generally require licensed professionals, permits, inspection and utility approval.
Ask for exact equipment models, all four warranty types, the production estimate, permit and interconnection handling, and service after installation. Our free checklist covers 20 questions.
